Stewardship & Engagement Strategies: Sustainability Reporting at Dollar Tree

Developed for Corporate Sustainability Reporting (SUMA PS5150) within Columbia University’s M.S. in Sustainability Management program, this case study examines how shareholder activism and engagement reshaped governance structures and sustainability disclosure at Dollar Tree, Inc.

“Shareholder engagement transformed how Dollar Tree governs, measures, and reports sustainability performance. While activist pressure led to meaningful improvements in disclosure and governance oversight, the company’s sustainability strategy remains largely reactive, with incomplete emissions targets and limited integration into long term business strategy.”
